City of Akron Joins Power a Clean Future Ohio, Signifying its Commitment to Climate Action and Clean, Renewable Energy

(Akron, OH) – With the adoption of a resolution by the City Council on March 25, 2024, the City of Akron has officially joined Power a Clean Future Ohio (PCFO), furthering its commitment to reduce carbon emissions and improve sustainability. PCFO is a statewide nonprofit organization that works directly with local governments to provide technical assistance and support to staff as they work to achieve goals in clean energy and emission reductions.

Akron is committed to leveraging available resources through its partnership with PCFO to identify and implement sustainability goals that further its ambition to build a healthy, prosperous, and resilient community for its residents.

“I’m excited to team up with Power a Clean Future Ohio to pursue efforts that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve environmental sustainability overall,” said Akron Mayor Shammas Malik. “Preserving our environment for future generations has to be a top priority. Partnering with PCFO will empower us with tools and resources to create sustainability plans and build greenhouse gas reduction initiatives which in turn improve overall quality of life in the community.”

Akron’s partnership with PCFO will provide the city with a network of resources and collaborative support to address climate challenges, foster innovative approaches to sustainability, and help shape the city’s environmental and economic future.

“Joining PCFO is the next step in Akron’s journey towards a more sustainable future that is data-driven and backed,” said Director of Sustainability and Resiliency Casey Shevlin. “In addition to joining PCFO, Mayor Malik has also formed the Office of Sustainability and Resiliency, which is a first for the City of Akron, and Akron was recently announced as 1 of 25 cities selected for the Bloomberg American Sustainable Cities program. This administration is committed to and invested in building a more sustainable future for our community.”

“Power a Clean Future Ohio is excited to welcome the City of Akron as our 50th member community,” said PCFO Executive Director Joe Flarida. “We are grateful for Mayor Malik’s leadership and look forward to working with city staff to identify achievable goals in carbon emission reductions that are equitable, economical, and measurable.”
