Power a Clean Future Ohio to deliver expert testimony on local costs of climate change at U.S. Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Hearing

New report by Ohio Environmental Council and Power a Clean Future Ohio details how climate change could cost Ohio municipalities nearly $6B annually by 2050

WHAT: On Thursday, Power a Clean Future Ohio Executive Director Joe Flarida will deliver expert testimony to the United States Senate Committee on Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs during its hearing, “Borrowed Time: The Economic Costs of Climate Change.”

Flarida will present on the findings from a first-of-its-kind report, The Bill is Coming Due: Calculating the Financial Cost of Climate Change to Ohio’s Local Governments, which provides a conservative estimate of the additional costs that municipalities can expect to incur due to climate change. According to the report, local governments across Ohio will need to increase municipal spending by as much as $5.9 billion annually by midcentury in order to adapt to the challenges of a worsening climate crisis.

The study was released in July by the Ohio Environmental Council, Power A Clean Future Ohio, and Scioto Analysis. It accounts for costs associated with climate adaptations that fall on municipal budgets, including infrastructure improvements, public health services, natural systems protections, and more.
