Power a Clean Future Ohio Statement on Budget Reconciliation Bill

This week, House Republicans passed a budget bill that would gut American clean energy production and raise costs for families – while also killing manufacturing jobs and threatening the industry at large.

Ultimately, this bill aims to eliminate clean energy incentives, and would increase costs for local governments and residents alike, while simultaneously destroying jobs. Across the nation, household electricity prices would rise by more than $110 per year and nearly 790,000 American jobs would be lost by 2030.

In Ohio, the Trump administration’s assault on clean energy has already threatened $500 million in investments and 1,300 jobs. Gutting these tax credits would devastate Ohio’s disadvantaged communities, where companies have announced $8.24 billion in investment and created 11,552 good-paying clean energy jobs. Ohio’s rural communities have seen project announcements totaling $1.2 billion in investment and 3,527 jobs now put at risk.

This bill represents an attack on working families and the economic future of communities across Ohio. At a time when we should be focusing on creating jobs, cutting energy costs, and building more competitive, resilient economies, this proposal does the opposite. By gutting clean energy incentives, policymakers have chosen to side with polluters and special interests over Ohio workers, manufacturers, and families.

This is a reckless bill that would raise costs, kill jobs, and stall the progress our communities have worked hard to achieve. Ohioans deserve better.

Statement from Power a Clean Future Ohio Executive Director Joe Flarida

"The budget reconciliation bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives is an affront to the livelihoods of Ohioans and a threat to our state and local economies.

"This bill strives to wholly repeal investments in clean energy projects that are not only widely popular across the nation -- but have also provided immense benefits to local communities through new investments, good-paying jobs, lower costs for families and businesses, and cleaner air.

"Clean energy industries have been booming across the United States, with Ohio growing as a leader in domestic solar manufacturing. This bill intends to undo that progress, devastating American manufacturing and making us less energy-independent.

"If enacted, this bill would cause local governments in Ohio to suffer, jobs would be lost, and Ohioans would be left to cover the cost. The Senate must reject this dangerous rollback of clean energy investments."
